Eligibility and how to apply for a visa that lets you stay with family in Canada for up to 2 years at a time

In other cases, you may be an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel.
You may need an eTA that stands for Electronic Travel Authorization when traveling by air which is electronically attached to their passport.
This authorization is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first for those visiting Canada. A new passport means you need a new eTA. If you’re visa-required and eligible for an eTA, but already have a valid Canadian visa you don’t need to apply for an eTA

If you’re currently in Canada and want to stay longer than your visa’s expiration date, you could file for an extension. In order to apply for an extension, you will need to fill out an IMM 5708 and apply for VISITOR RECORD. A visitor record is not a visa.

Once your current visitor visa expires and If you want to stay in Canada then you will have to apply to restore your status or you will have to leave Canada. You have to apply for a Restoration of Status within 90 days of your visitor visa expiration date.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRRCC) won’t automatically issue you a visitor visa if you extend your work or study permit. If you need a new visitor visa, you may need to submit a separate application.
